The concept behind Rosetta Stone is based on the observation that children can induce the grammar of their mother tongue from examples in which the specific functions of linguistic units are contrasted. As Rosetta Stone would have it, since children learn effortlessly this way, then why not adults?The problem is that children require millions of impressions to induce the grammar. Also, when mature humans learn a second language, the syntax of the first language interferes with the notions one constructs of the second. It's therefore highly inefficient to teach language this way. With adults it's actually much more efficient to be more explicit about the grammar of the target language -- to provide clear descriptions of the rules accompanied by many examples and much practice. Immersion can be very useful, but not to the exclusion of explicit instruction in the rules of the language. I found...
